CHARLES J. COLTON SCHOOL

Part of the massive rebuilding effort in post-Katrina New Orleans, the renovation and expansion of this 144,000 sf public school has served as an anchor for the ongoing St. Claude Avenue revitalization. The project gives new life to the building for the twenty-first century and includes new classrooms, offices, science labs, a cafeteria with kitchen, media center, gymnasium, and black box theater. The original concrete structure and prominent stone entry have been repaired for reuse, and the original passive daylight strategies of the historic building are retained and expanded upon to house a healthy, modern learning environment.

This project was completed with Waggonner & Ball, and professional photography is by Alise O’Brien Photography. The project was awarded an AIA New Orleans Honor Award for Historic Preservation.
